Elliott, George – SERN 1290

In The Great War

that was to end all wars,

the stretcher bearer

from Adamstown

sought refuge

from his prescient fear

in the arms

of the women

of Amiens

before he died

in the chaos

that followed

the big bang

at Messines Ridge.

When the news

reached home,

it is said

that the hair

on his mother’s head

turned white

overnight.
